Dan's solo trip: I did a solo backpack and got a late start to the trailhead around 3pm, after a bit of exploring, i got serious about finding a watersource outside of the preserve to set up camp. I ended up on a granite ledge at the very top of Verkeerber Kill Falls, a high drop waterfall that flows off the ridge to a valley below. The overnight low was 18º inside the tent, according to my temperature log on my bruno meter.
I woke up to inadequate ventilation and icicles forming on the roof of the tent. I packed up camp, then headed down to the very edge of the ledge and cooked my dehydrated eggs (which were surprisingly very good) and my tea watching the sun rise and the water fall into the ice sculpture below. Only considering the time on the trail, the trip was very nice and very relaxing.
